What is an Energy Statement?
Latest planning policies across the UK will often now include sustainability targets for building projects. Each local authority has its own specific requirements but often you must demonstrate how these targets will be met, by the means of producing and submitting an energy statement to the planning authority.
Energy Statements are carried out and produced to determine how your project will meet the local authority specific requirement. Often this will mean going above and beyond building minimum regulation compliance to show that you have contributed a further improvement by a reduction in carbon emissions (CO₂) or energy (kWh).
Dependent on the requirement there are various ways and means of meeting the target, these can often be achieved by increased thermal performance of a building (Be Lean), better performing or more considerate building services (Be Clean) or the incorporation of renewable technologies (Be Green).

How does it work?
If your local authority has specified that you must provide an energy statement as part of the planning process, this would need to be carried out in the early stages of a project.
Typically, the assessment will be carried out inline with either SAP or SBEM assessment methodology, or both depending on the project.
Firstly, we would assess the project using the correct methodology, we would then explore various options to meet the target in line with the specific requirements and aim to work with you as the client to find the most appropriate and cost-effective method of compliance and procedure. Once we have this agreed, we would then produce the energy statement which would be submitted as part of your planning application.
